Delhi LG Sandhu Urges Coordinated Action on Air Pollution

With a few months remaining before the onset of winter when Delhi’s air quality typically worsens, Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Monday directed agencies across the National Capital Region (NCR) to coordinate and implement a time-bound roadmap to curb pollution.

Review of Pollution Control Measures

During a meeting with Rajesh Verma, Chairperson of the Commission for Air Quality Management, Sandhu reviewed existing pollution-control measures and identified road dust, vehicular emissions, biomass burning, and industrial pollution as the primary contributors to poor air quality. He stressed that air pollution is a regional challenge requiring regional solutions and called for coordinated action by agencies across Delhi and neighboring states to ensure measurable improvements before winter.

Focus on Dust Mitigation

According to the LG’s office, the meeting focused on strengthening pollution control measures, improving inter-agency coordination, and formulating long-term strategies. Sandhu emphasized aggressive dust-mitigation efforts, including wider deployment of mechanized road sweeping machines, time-bound repair of roads, and prompt disposal of desilted material. He observed that road dust remains a critical but often underestimated source of pollution. Underlining that most responsible agencies operate within the city, he stressed the need for better route monitoring, increased roadside plantations, and optimum utilization of dust-control infrastructure.

Transition to Cleaner Mobility

Sandhu also emphasized the transition to cleaner mobility through the deployment of electric buses and wider adoption of electric vehicles. He called for stricter monitoring of industrial emissions across the NCR and sustained efforts to address stubble burning in neighboring states. The LG said tackling air pollution is no longer a matter of choice but an imperative that cannot be postponed.
