Delhi-NCR Chokes as CAQM Reimposes GRAP Stage IV Curbs
Delhi woke up to dense smog on January 19, with air quality slipping back into the severe category. The Central Pollution Control Board reported an AQI of 455, leading to poor visibility and travel disruptions across several areas. Pollution levels also worsened in the National Capital Region, with Noida's AQI rising to 430 and Gurgaon's reaching 378.
Weather Conditions and Pollution Impact
The India Meteorological Department stated that Delhi's maximum temperature settled at 22.7°C, which is above normal. Meanwhile, the minimum temperature dipped to 5.3°C, below average for this time of year. These conditions contributed to the worsening air quality, making it difficult for residents to breathe easily.
CAQM Takes Action with GRAP Stage IV
In response to the deteriorating air quality, the Commission for Air Quality Management reinvoked Stage-IV measures under the Graded Response Action Plan across Delhi and the NCR. The CAQM Sub-Committee on GRAP unanimously decided to invoke all actions as envisaged under Stage-IV, targeting severe plus air quality with immediate effect. This proactive measure aims to curb pollution levels and protect public health.
Republic Day Rehearsals Continue Under Tight Security
Rehearsals for the 77th Republic Day parade are underway at Kartavya Path ahead of the January 26 celebrations. Delhi Police and paramilitary forces have implemented a multi-layered security cover to ensure safety. This includes round-the-clock CCTV surveillance with facial recognition systems, anti-drone units, and sniper teams. Extensive verification drives are also being conducted across the New Delhi district.
Chief Guests and Celebrations
European Council President Antonio Luís Santos da Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will serve as the chief guests at this year's Republic Day celebrations. Their presence highlights the importance of the event, with security measures being intensified to accommodate high-profile attendees.
Residents are advised to take precautions due to the severe pollution, while authorities work to manage both environmental and security challenges in the capital.
