Delhi woke up to a warm morning on Thursday as the minimum temperature settled at 27.2 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season's average. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heatwave conditions in the national capital over the next two days.
Temperature Rise and Heatwave Warning
The maximum temperature is expected to soar to around 40 degrees Celsius, with clear skies and strong sunlight contributing to the heat. The IMD's yellow alert indicates that heatwave conditions are likely to prevail in isolated pockets, urging residents to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
Weather Forecast for the Week
According to the IMD, the heatwave is expected to persist until Saturday, after which a slight relief may come with possible thundershowers. The relative humidity at 8:30 am was 53 percent, adding to the discomfort. The air quality index (AQI) was recorded in the 'moderate' category at 186, according to the Central Pollution Control Board.
Precautionary Measures
Authorities have advised people to take necessary precautions, especially during the afternoon hours. Vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions should avoid going out during peak heat hours. The Delhi government has also directed hospitals to remain prepared for heat-related illnesses.
This warm spell comes after a relatively cooler April, with the city experiencing below-normal temperatures earlier this month. The sudden rise in temperature has caught many off guard, but the IMD assures that such conditions are typical for this time of the year.
Residents are encouraged to follow official updates and stay indoors as much as possible until the heatwave subsides.
