Delhi Weather: IMD Yellow Alert for Rain, Gusty Winds Extended After Sunny Sunday
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a yellow alert for rain on Sunday, but Delhi-NCR residents were met with a surprisingly sunny and warm day instead. Daytime temperatures spiked significantly, defying the forecast and leaving many reaching for their fans and coolers.
Temperature Spike and Missed Rainfall
On Sunday, the maximum temperature in Delhi soared to 36.2 degrees Celsius, which is four degrees above the normal average for this time of year. This reading was alarmingly close to the season's high of 36.8 degrees Celsius recorded on March 11. A fresh western disturbance began influencing northwest India on Sunday, but it largely bypassed the Delhi-NCR region, leading to clear skies and rapid heating.
Weather analysts noted that while rainfall was recorded along the Himalayan mountains and in parts of northern Punjab, most of Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh remained dry. "We saw gusty winds in Rajasthan too, but in Delhi, it remained mostly clear, leading to the maximum temperature rising quickly," explained Mahesh Palawat, Vice President at Skymet Weather Services.
Extended Weather Alert and Weekly Forecast
In response to the evolving conditions, the IMD has extended the yellow alert for light rain and gusty winds to today. There are also chances of scattered light rain on Tuesday as the weather system continues to affect the region.
Looking further ahead, the IMD predicts another fresh western disturbance is likely to arrive around April 2. This new system could bring very light rain to Delhi on April 3 and 4, offering some potential relief from the heat. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest forecasts as these patterns can change rapidly.
