Deliberate Tree Burning Along Mula-Mutha Riverbanks Sparks Outrage in Pune's Kharadi
Residents of Kharadi in Pune have raised serious allegations of deliberate tree burning along the banks of the Mula-Mutha river, with repeated incidents causing widespread environmental concern. The lack of strict action by authorities against this illegal activity has only fueled public anger and frustration.
Major Fire Incident Near Mundhwa-Kharadi Bridge
A significant fire erupted late on Sunday night near the Mundhwa-Kharadi bridge, within the floodline area of the river. The blaze rapidly spread through dry grass, shrubs, and several large trees along the riverbank, resulting in substantial environmental damage. Eyewitnesses reported that thick plumes of smoke engulfed the locality for an extended period, highlighting the severity of the incident.
Residents Claim Intentional Acts by Unidentified Miscreants
Local residents assert that this was not an isolated event. According to their accounts, unidentified individuals have been intentionally setting fire to dry leaves and debris collected at the base of trees. This practice allows the flames to spread to branches and trunks, ultimately destroying fully grown trees that have taken years to mature.
Shubham Tripathi, an environmental activist in the area, emphasized, "These fires are not accidental. Someone is deliberately burning the dry leaves around the trees, which then spreads and kills the trees. This has been happening repeatedly and needs urgent attention."Anger Over Late-Night Incidents and Lack of Action
Residents expressed their anger over the recurring nature of these incidents. Ravindra Kodre, a resident of Kharadi, stated, "We have noticed that such incidents happen late at night, making it difficult to catch those responsible. The authorities must increase patrolling and take strict action against the culprits."
Another local resident, who preferred to remain anonymous, added, "Large trees that took years to grow are being destroyed in minutes, along with birds' nests and small animals. This is cruelty as well as a serious environmental loss."
Civic Officials Promise Investigation and Action
In response to the growing concerns, civic officials have pledged to look into the matter. Sanjay Pol, assistant commissioner of the Nagar Road ward office, confirmed that officials would be dispatched to inspect the site. He assured, "If the fires are found to be deliberate, strict action will be taken against those responsible."
Urgent Call for Vigilance and Preventive Measures
Residents have urgently called upon the civic administration to enhance vigilance and implement preventive measures. They warn that continued negligence could lead to irreversible damage to the riverbank ecosystem, emphasizing the need for immediate intervention to protect the environment and prevent further destruction.
