Jamshedpur: The East Singhbhum district administration has launched a chariot to sensitize the public on safety measures during natural calamities such as lightning and heatwaves. The vehicle will traverse both urban and rural areas across 11 blocks to create awareness, officials announced on Saturday.
District Administration's Initiative
Deputy Commissioner Rajiv Ranjan stated, "The chariot will reach every nook and corner to educate people on safety protocols." He added that the vehicle will also disseminate information regarding the House Listing and Housing Census (HLO), which is part of the first phase of Census 2027.
Lightning Risks in the Region
According to the state disaster management department, thunder and lightning incidents predominantly occur between May and August. Data from the past 11 years (2013-14 to 2024-25) indicates that over 220 people have died from lightning strikes in East Singhbhum, averaging about 20 deaths annually. The majority of incidents are reported from rural areas including Baharagora, Chakulia, Dhalbhumgarh, Potka, Patamda, Ghatsila, and Dumaria.
Heatwave Impact
Additionally, the district records approximately 150 heatwave cases each year, with fatalities ranging from one to five. A study by the Environment Conservation Society revealed that between 2019 and 2023, East Singhbhum experienced 35 to 46 heat days per summer, where temperatures reached or exceeded 40 degrees Celsius. In 2024, a total of 263 heatwave cases were reported, with six suspected heatwave-related deaths.
The chariot initiative aims to reduce these casualties by ensuring that residents, especially in vulnerable rural areas, are aware of precautionary measures during extreme weather events.
