The re-entry of the tusker named Omkar into the Torxem area of Pernem, Goa, on Sunday morning has ignited significant concern and fear among local farmers and residents. This development follows the elephant's recent relocation efforts by the Goa forest department, which had guided the pachyderm towards Maharashtra in an attempt to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts.
Failed Relocation and Immediate Consequences
After a brief period in Digne village within Maharashtra, Omkar unexpectedly returned to the Goa border. Sources indicate that villagers in Maharashtra denied the animal safe passage, forcing the gentle giant to turn back. Upon re-entering Goa, the elephant immediately resumed a destructive path, flattening crops and causing damage to parked vehicles. This has exacerbated tensions during the crucial cultivation season, particularly affecting cashew farmers who are now in despair over potential losses.
Spreading Panic and Agricultural Threats
The alarm has quickly spread to the neighboring village of Tamboxem in Pernem, where residents fear for their Rabi crops, including chilli, millets, and brinjal. A panch member from Tamboxem expressed deep concern, stating, "We fear that he may travel to Tamboxem and attack our crops or damage property." This sentiment underscores the growing anxiety as the elephant's movements threaten both livelihoods and safety in the region.
Local Demands for Government Intervention
In response to the escalating situation, locals are urgently calling for state government intervention. They are demanding the deployment of expert mahouts to capture Omkar and relocate the animal to a permanent sanctuary, with Karnataka being a suggested destination. This plea highlights the need for a sustainable solution to prevent further damage and ensure the well-being of both the community and the wildlife.
