The Garhwa district administration has imposed a comprehensive ban on all river ghats and other water bodies within a 200-meter perimeter under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). This decisive action aligns with the directives issued by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and aims to curb illegal activities and protect aquatic ecosystems.
Duration and Scope of the Ban
Garhwa Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Sanjay Kumar announced that the prohibition will remain in effect for the next three months, extending until the end of the monsoon season. The ban encompasses several major rivers, including Sone, Koel, Banki, Danro, and Sarswatiya, along with all associated ghats located within the sadar sub-division area. Additionally, the movement of sand-laden tractors and trucks to and from these water bodies has been strictly prohibited.
Enforcement and Vigilance Measures
To ensure compliance, the SDM has issued specific instructions to local authorities. Police station officers in charge have been directed to enhance patrolling and maintain constant vigilance over suspicious mining activities. The district mining office has been tasked with conducting regular inspections and monitoring of sand ghats in collaboration with the Circle Officer (CO). A detailed report on actions taken against violators must be submitted promptly.
This proactive measure underscores the administration's commitment to safeguarding natural resources and adhering to environmental regulations. Residents and stakeholders are urged to cooperate with the authorities to prevent any unlawful exploitation of water bodies.
