Gujarat Shivers as Naliya Hits 4.8°C, State Records Sharp Temperature Drop
Gujarat Cold Wave: Naliya at 4.8°C, Temps Plunge Statewide

A sharp and sudden cold wave has gripped Gujarat, with the state recording temperatures significantly below normal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported a marked drop in minimum temperatures, particularly in the Kutch and North Gujarat regions.

Naliya Records Season's Lowest at 4.8°C

The town of Naliya in Kutch district became the coldest spot in Gujarat on Friday, January 10, 2026, recording a chilling minimum temperature of 4.8 degrees Celsius. This is not only the lowest reading in the state but also the season's lowest so far. The plunge has been drastic, considering Naliya registered a minimum of 12.6°C just ten days prior, on December 30.

This recorded temperature is a substantial 4.8 degrees below the normal minimum expected for the area, indicating the intensity of the current cold spell.

Statewide Chill: Key Cities and Their Temperatures

The cold conditions were widespread across Gujarat. Following Naliya, other regions experienced notably low temperatures:

  • Amreli recorded 8.6°C, which is 2.7 degrees below normal.
  • Rajkot shivered at 9.4°C, a significant 3.1 degrees below its average.
  • Gandhinagar, the state capital, saw a low of 10.8°C (0.2° below normal).
  • Ahmedabad registered 11.7°C, which is 0.6 degrees below the normal mark.

Other cities like Deesa, Bhuj, Dahod, Kandla, and Porbandar also recorded temperatures below their seasonal averages, as per IMD observations.

Day Temperatures Also Take a Dip

The cold wave was not limited to the night and early morning. The maximum daytime temperatures across Gujarat were also 1 to 4 degrees below normal. The range of maximum temperatures recorded across the state varied from a cool 22.7 degrees Celsius in Gandhinagar to a relatively warmer 29.2 degrees Celsius in Surat.

The IMD's bulletin highlighted that minimum temperatures fell "appreciably to markedly" in parts of Kutch and "appreciably" in parts of North Gujarat. It further noted that temperatures were "below normal to appreciably below normal" in parts of the Saurashtra region.

This widespread dip in both minimum and maximum temperatures signals a pronounced winter spell across Gujarat, urging residents to take necessary precautions against the cold.
