Gujarat's Scorching Heatwave to Break with Mid-Week Showers, IMD Forecasts Relief
Gujarat Heatwave Break: IMD Forecasts Showers on March 18-19

Gujarat's Intense Heatwave Set to Break with Mid-Week Showers

Ahmedabad: Gujarat's prolonged spell of scorching heat, which has felt more characteristic of peak May than mid-March, is finally approaching a cooling phase. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast predicting light showers and thundershowers to sweep across the state on March 18 and 19, offering much-needed respite from the blistering conditions.

Widespread Relief Across Multiple Districts

From the northern plains of Banaskantha and Patan to the coastal regions of Gir Somnath and Kutch, approximately 16 districts are preparing for a mid-week drizzle expected to douse the heatwave-induced sizzle. The IMD's national forecast indicates that a Western Disturbance moving in on March 14 will help break the persistent heat spell in northwest India.

The timing of this meteorological shift is particularly welcome. On Friday, Ahmedabad recorded a maximum temperature of 39.5°C, which was 4.4 degrees above the seasonal norm, following Thursday's 38.9°C. The minimum temperature settled at 21.7°C, still 2.6 degrees higher than normal, though slightly lower than Thursday's 23.2°C.

Temperature Normalization and Cooling Trend

Starting Saturday, temperatures across Gujarat are expected to begin normalizing, providing relief to residents who have endured 40-degree heat since the beginning of the month. According to IMD projections, citizens can anticipate a gradual cooling trend commencing this Saturday, with daytime mercury levels likely to decrease by 2-4 degrees over the subsequent three days.

The real surprise, however, arrives in the middle of the week. The IMD specifically predicts that the scorching heat will give way to "light showers and thundershowers" on March 18 and 19. On March 18, isolated light rain or thundershowers are forecast for Banaskantha and Patan. The following day, March 19, similar conditions are expected in multiple districts including:

  • Banaskantha
  • Patan
  • Vadodara
  • Chhota Udepur
  • Narmada
  • Bharuch
  • Surat
  • Tapi
  • Surendranagar
  • Rajkot
  • Amreli
  • Bhavnagar
  • Morbi
  • Gir Somnath
  • Botad
  • Kutch

Recent Temperature Highlights Across Gujarat

On Friday, Rajkot emerged as the state's hotspot with a maximum temperature of 39.8°C, closely followed by Ahmedabad at 39.5°C, Surat at 39.3°C, Vadodara at 39.2°C, and Deesa at 39°C. In contrast, Dwarka recorded the lowest maximum temperature at 29.4°C, highlighting the varied thermal conditions across different regions of Gujarat.

This forecast comes as a significant development for a state that has been grappling with unseasonably high temperatures throughout March. The anticipated showers and cooling trend represent a meteorological intervention that could substantially improve living conditions and reduce heat-related stress for millions of residents across Gujarat.
