Gujarat Swelters as Heatwave Pushes Temperatures Past 40°C, Rajkot Tops at 41.7°C
Gujarat Heatwave: Rajkot Hits 41.7°C, Temperatures Soar Across State

Gujarat Battles Intense Heatwave as Temperatures Soar Past 40 Degrees Celsius

The state of Gujarat experienced severe heatwave conditions on Sunday, with temperatures climbing well above the 40 degrees Celsius mark across multiple cities. Inland regions were particularly affected by the rising mercury levels, creating challenging conditions for residents and highlighting the widespread nature of the heat surge.

Rajkot Emerges as Hottest Spot with 41.7°C Reading

Rajkot recorded the highest temperature in Gujarat at 41.7 degrees Celsius, which represents a significant 2.4 degrees above the normal seasonal average for this time of year. This extreme reading underscores the intensity of the heatwave affecting the region and places Rajkot at the forefront of the state's weather concerns.

Multiple Cities Experience Temperature Surges

Several other major urban centers reported similarly elevated temperatures. Ahmedabad and Bhuj both registered maximum temperatures of 40.7 degrees Celsius, while Kandla recorded the same reading—a remarkable 4.7 degrees above its normal temperature range. Vadodara and Gandhinagar followed closely with 40.4°C and 40.2°C respectively, indicating a broad pattern of heat affecting central Gujarat.

Additional cities reporting intense daytime heat included Deesa at 39.8°C, Amreli and Bhavnagar both around 39°C, and Surat at 38.9°C. These readings demonstrate how widespread the heatwave conditions have become across the state.

Residents Adapt to Sweltering Conditions

In response to the extreme heat, residents across affected areas implemented various coping strategies. In Rajkot, people placed bowls of water—often containing ice—in open spaces and on terraces to provide drinking sources for birds, particularly pigeons struggling with the high temperatures. Fruit sellers were observed using umbrellas for shade protection, while many individuals covered their heads and faces with scarves and cloth to mitigate the harsh sun exposure.

Coastal Areas Offer Some Relief

Coastal regions provided relatively cooler conditions due to the moderating influence of sea breezes. Dwarka recorded a maximum temperature of 30.8°C, Veraval reached 31.4°C, and Daman registered 35.6°C. These lower readings contrasted sharply with the inland heat and offered some respite in specific geographic areas.

IMD Issues Weather Forecast and Warnings

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heatwave conditions are likely to persist at isolated locations within Kutch district. The coastal regions of Gujarat and the Saurashtra-Kutch belt are expected to experience continued hot and humid conditions in the coming days, suggesting that relief may not be immediate for affected areas.

Night Temperatures Provide Limited Comfort

Evening and nighttime conditions offered minimal relief from the daytime heat. Minimum temperatures across Gujarat ranged between 20°C and 26°C, with Bhavnagar recording a relatively high minimum of 26.6°C. Dang reported the lowest minimum temperature at 19.9°C, though this still represented warm conditions for overnight periods.

The combination of high daytime temperatures and warm nights creates particularly challenging living conditions, as residents have limited opportunities to cool down during traditional rest periods.
