Ahmedabad's Temperature Anomalies and Health Advisories

In Ahmedabad, the maximum temperature reached 41.4°C on Wednesday, representing a substantial 7.2 degrees above the normal level for this time of year. The minimum temperature also remained unusually elevated at 22.5°C, approximately 4.6 degrees above normal. Forecasts for Thursday predict maximum and minimum temperatures around 41°C and 24°C respectively.

An IMD official emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, "Apart from the high temperatures, the departure from normal is also significant. In places like Rajkot and Ahmedabad, the temperature is about 7 degrees above normal, which indicates severe heat conditions even though the summer season has just begun."

Officials from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and medical professionals have issued urgent advisories for residents to take precautions during afternoon hours. Citizens are being urged to:

  • Stay adequately hydrated throughout the day
  • Wear light, breathable clothing
  • Cover their heads when outdoors
  • Take frequent breaks if working in direct sunlight

IMD Alerts and Meteorological Patterns

The IMD has issued an orange alert for severe heatwave conditions in Surendranagar and Rajkot districts on Thursday, while a yellow alert has been declared for heatwave conditions in multiple districts including:

  1. Banaskantha
  2. Patan
  3. Vadodara
  4. Surat
  5. Porbandar
  6. Junagadh
  7. Amreli
  8. Morbi
  9. Kutch

According to weather forecasts, hot and humid conditions are likely to prevail across Gujarat's coastal regions. Meteorologists attribute the sharp temperature rise to northerly to north-easterly winds prevailing over the region. Some relief from the intense heat is expected starting Saturday.

Other Indian regions experiencing similar extreme conditions include western Rajasthan and parts of eastern Maharashtra, though Gujarat currently shows the most concentrated heat intensity according to IMD percentile data.
