Himachal Pradesh: Rain, Snowfall Bring Sharp Temperature Drop

Himachal Pradesh Experiences Widespread Rain and Snowfall, Temperatures Drop Sharply

Amid an orange alert issued by weather authorities, Himachal Pradesh has witnessed varied precipitation across its regions. The low and mid hills of the state received light to moderate rainfall, while the higher reaches experienced light snowfall. This weather activity has led to a notable decline in temperatures throughout Himachal Pradesh, affecting daily life and travel.

Rainfall and Snowfall Impact Multiple Districts

In the districts of Kullu, Mandi, Chamba, Shimla, Solan, Kangra, and Sirmaur, residents reported rainfall of varying intensities. Concurrently, the higher altitude areas, including Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti districts, saw light snowfall. This snowfall has particularly impacted the mountain passes, creating challenging conditions for movement and transportation.

Road Blockages and Safety Measures in Lahaul-Spiti

The continuous snowfall since Thursday has resulted in significant disruptions in Lahaul-Spiti. According to the District Disaster Management Authority, a total of 18 roads have been blocked due to the accumulation of snow. Key routes affected include Darcha to Sarchu, Gramphu to Batal, and Lossar to Batal, hampering connectivity and emergency services.

In response to the hazardous conditions, the Lahaul-Spiti administration took proactive steps on Thursday by issuing an order. This order bans the movement of tourists and suspends commercial activities in avalanche-prone areas near the North Portal of the Atal Tunnel. This measure aims to prevent accidents and ensure public safety during the unstable weather period.

Temperature Drop Recorded Across Himachal Pradesh

The combination of rain and snow has caused a sharp decrease in maximum temperatures across the state, with drops ranging from 1°C to 7°C. Data from the Meteorological Centre provides specific insights:

  • Shimla and Dharamshala recorded a maximum temperature of 23°C, which is 2.2°C below the normal level.
  • Manali experienced a maximum temperature of 15.2°C, marking a significant 4.3°C below normal.
  • Mandi saw a maximum temperature of 23.5°C, a notable 7.1°C below the expected norm.
  • Kangra recorded 25.6°C, which is 4.8°C below normal.

Una registered the highest maximum temperature at 33°C, while Keylong reported the lowest minimum temperature of 1.8°C, highlighting the extreme variations within the state.

Weather Alerts and Rainfall Deficits

The weather department has issued alerts for the coming days, including an orange and yellow alert for thunderstorms and gusty winds in parts of Himachal Pradesh on April 3 and 4. These warnings advise residents and travelers to exercise caution and stay updated on weather developments.

In terms of precipitation, Himachal Pradesh has recorded a rainfall deficit this month. The state has received 2.9 mm of rainfall, which is 38% less than the normal amount of 4.7 mm. This follows a trend from last month, where the state recorded 93.7 mm of rainfall, 17% less than the normal 113.4 mm. These deficits raise concerns about water resources and agricultural impacts in the region.

The ongoing weather patterns in Himachal Pradesh underscore the importance of preparedness and adherence to safety guidelines during such climatic events. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to mitigate risks and provide timely updates to the public.
