The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a comprehensive weather advisory for the period June 12 to June 17, warning of a mix of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, hailstorms, heat waves, and rough sea conditions across various parts of the country. Travellers planning road trips, flights, or monsoon getaways are advised to monitor forecasts closely.
Heavy Rainfall in Southern and Western Regions
Kerala, Mahe, and Coastal Karnataka are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall on June 12, with heavy showers persisting through much of the forecast period. Popular monsoon destinations like Kerala's backwaters and the Western Ghats may face waterlogging, reduced visibility, and interruptions to outdoor activities. Similarly, Konkan and Goa will likely see hot and humid conditions despite the advancing monsoon.
Northeast and Eastern India Under Active Weather
Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya are forecast to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall on June 12 and 13, with heavy showers continuing until at least June 17. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are also expected to experience consecutive days of heavy rain. The IMD warns of potential localised flooding, landslides, and mudslides in vulnerable hilly areas, urging travellers to build flexibility into itineraries and follow local advisories.
In eastern India, Bihar and Jharkhand are likely to see heavy rainfall on June 12 and 13, while Odisha may witness heavy showers from June 12 through June 15. Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Interior Karnataka, and parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will also experience significant rainfall early in the period.
Severe Thunderstorms and Hailstorms in North India
Northern India, including Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and adjoining regions, is bracing for severe thunderstorm activity rather than sustained rain. The IMD forecasts thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 60-70 kmph, gusting up to 80 kmph, over Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan on June 12. Hailstorms are likely in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, and western Uttar Pradesh. These conditions may disrupt flight operations, slow road traffic, and affect outdoor sightseeing plans.
Heat Wave Conditions and Other Impacts
Heat wave conditions are expected to persist in isolated pockets of Telangana, Vidarbha, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh during the initial days of the forecast period. The IMD also highlights possible impacts of heavy rainfall, including localised flooding, waterlogging in low-lying urban areas, temporary closure of underpasses, traffic congestion, and minor damage to vulnerable structures. In hilly regions, landslides and mudslides remain primary concerns.
Travellers are advised to stay updated with local weather bulletins and exercise caution, especially in landslide-prone routes and areas with severe thunderstorm warnings.
