The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a five-day heatwave alert for Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, effective from May 18. According to the weather department, temperatures in these regions are likely to soar above 45 degrees Celsius, posing significant health risks to residents.
Heatwave Conditions Expected
The IMD has warned that severe heatwave conditions are expected to prevail across the region, with maximum temperatures rising by 2-4 degrees Celsius above normal. The alert covers major cities including Chandigarh, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Ambala, and Karnal. The heatwave is expected to persist until May 22, with a slight possibility of relief thereafter.
Health Advisory Issued
In response to the forecast, health authorities have issued advisories urging people to take precautions. The IMD has advised avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours, staying hydrated, and wearing light clothing. Vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions are particularly at risk.
- Drink plenty of water and avoid alcoholic or caffeinated beverages.
- Use umbrellas, hats, and sunglasses when outdoors.
- Keep living spaces cool and ventilated.
Impact on Agriculture and Daily Life
The heatwave is expected to impact agricultural activities, with farmers advised to take measures to protect crops. The IMD has also warned of increased energy demand due to higher use of cooling appliances. Residents are urged to check on neighbors and relatives who may be living alone.
The IMD will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary. Authorities in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh have been put on alert to handle any heat-related emergencies.
