The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for Delhi and the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, warning of severe heat conditions that are expected to persist for the next few days.
Delhi and Vidarbha Bear the Brunt
The national capital, Delhi, recorded a maximum temperature of 47.8 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, making it one of the hottest days of the season. The mercury in parts of Vidarbha, including Nagpur and Wardha, touched 47.5 degrees Celsius. The IMD has cautioned that temperatures could rise further, with no immediate relief in sight.
Heatwave conditions have also been reported in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat, where temperatures have crossed the 45-degree mark. The IMD has advised residents to avoid going outdoors during peak afternoon hours and to stay hydrated.
Impact on Daily Life and Health
The extreme heat has disrupted normal life, with schools in several states either closed or operating on reduced hours. Power demand has surged as air conditioners and coolers run at full capacity, leading to occasional outages in some areas. Hospitals have reported an increase in heat-related illnesses, including heatstroke and dehydration.
Health experts have urged people to take precautions, such as wearing light clothing, using umbrellas or hats, and drinking plenty of water. The elderly and children are particularly vulnerable to heatstroke.
