Karnataka Grapples with Intense Heatwave as Temperatures Soar Past 45°C

Parts of Kalaburagi district in Karnataka recorded a maximum temperature of 44°C to 45°C on Wednesday, while Bengaluru experienced a high of 35.8°C, as the mercury tested new levels this summer. The maximum temperatures in several places across the state over the past couple of days have topped previous records for April, signaling an alarming heatwave.

Bengaluru's Rising Mercury and Forecast

In Bengaluru, the maximum temperature is expected to hover between 36°C and 37°C over the next two days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). On Tuesday, the city recorded a maximum of 36.6°C, marking the hottest day of 2026 so far. Although the maximum temperature dropped by 0.8°C on Wednesday, mercury levels are likely to touch 38°C in the coming days, as per CS Patil, a scientist at IMD Bengaluru.

Dry weather is prevailing across Bengaluru, with IMD forecasts indicating that any thundershower activity will be isolated to one or two areas, providing little relief from the scorching heat. Residents are advised to stay indoors during peak hours and maintain hydration.

With temperatures rising 3°C to 4°C above normal, Kalaburagi deputy commissioner Fauzia Tarannum has issued advisories urging citizens to avoid venturing out between 11:30 am and 5 pm for non-essential activities and to stay hydrated to prevent heat-related illnesses.

IMD Alerts and Regional Impact

The Met department has issued orange and yellow heatwave alerts in Kalyana Karnataka for the next two days, highlighting the severity of the situation. Additionally, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Gadag, Haveri, Dharwad, and Belagavi have been placed under a yellow alert for hot and humid conditions, indicating widespread discomfort across the state.

This heatwave is part of a broader trend of rising temperatures in Karnataka, with experts warning of potential health risks and urging precautionary measures. The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely, providing real-time updates to help residents cope with the extreme weather.
