Kohima DC Reiterates Total Ban on Single-Use Plastic

Dimapur: Kohima Deputy Commissioner B Henok Buchem on Thursday reiterated the total ban on single-use plastic across all villages under the district. In a notification issued in pursuance of the home department (GAB-I) notification dated May 18, the directives of the Supreme Court on February 14, and the provisions of the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules 2021, Buchem reaffirmed earlier notifications on the ban issued by the state urban development department.

Strict Compliance Directed

All villages under Kohima district have been directed to strictly comply with the ban on various single-use plastic items. The notification emphasizes that no exceptions will be permitted, and violators may face legal action as per the existing rules and court orders.

Background of the Ban

The ban on single-use plastic has been a long-standing initiative by the Government of India and the Supreme Court to reduce plastic pollution. The Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules 2021 prohibit the manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale, and use of identified single-use plastic items. The Kohima district administration has been consistently working to implement these rules at the grassroots level.

Local authorities have been urged to conduct awareness campaigns and enforce the ban effectively. The notification serves as a reminder to all residents and village councils to adhere to the regulations and contribute to a cleaner and greener Kohima.
