Kolkata remained in the grip of relentless heat and humidity on Wednesday, as a short-lived evening thundershower failed to provide any substantial respite from the oppressive weather. Although the city recorded a maximum temperature of 36.2 degrees Celsius, which is just 0.4 degrees above normal, the high humidity levels made the real-feel temperature soar to nearly 50 degrees Celsius.
Brief Downpour Brings Little Relief
Dark clouds gathered over the city in the late afternoon, accompanied by thunderclaps and gusty winds. However, the rain lasted only about 20 minutes, delivering 11.6 mm of precipitation. This brief shower ended a dry spell but did little to alleviate the heat and humidity that have been plaguing the city.
Meteorological Explanation
According to H R Biswas, head of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata, a cyclonic circulation in the lower atmosphere, combined with heating and continuous moisture flow, is creating conditions favorable for thundershowers across many parts of the state. He noted that Kolkata has a 50 percent chance of experiencing similar showers on Thursday, but these are unlikely to be widespread enough to significantly influence the weather.
Meteorologists explained that at this time of the year, only widespread and prolonged thundershowers or nor'westers can effectively reduce both temperature and humidity. While Kolkata received only a brief spell, other districts such as Bankura, West Midnapore, and Birbhum experienced heavy thunderstorms on Wednesday.
