Kolkata Prepares for Significant Temperature Surge

The weather office announced on Sunday that Kolkata and surrounding areas will experience a notable rise in temperatures over the next few days. This comes after below-normal temperatures dominated the first half of January across the state.

Detailed Temperature Projections

According to the Alipore Regional Meteorological Centre, temperatures across South Bengal will increase by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius within the next 48 hours. Following this initial rise, another 2 degree Celsius increase is expected after Tuesday.

This means Kolkata residents can anticipate a total temperature rise of 4 to 5 degrees Celsius in the coming days. The warming trend will likely replace the cold weather that persisted until last week.

Saraswati Puja Weather Outlook

The timing of this temperature increase coincides with the upcoming Saraswati Puja on January 23rd. Weather officials indicate that celebrants will probably experience warmer conditions than usual for this annual festival.

"There is a possibility of scattered rain next week," noted a weather office officer. "Between January 23rd and 29th, the minimum temperature may rise by another 2 degrees Celsius."

Recent Temperature Readings

On Saturday, Kolkata recorded specific temperature measurements that provide context for the upcoming changes:

  • Minimum temperature: 13.1 degrees Celsius (1.4 degrees below normal)
  • Maximum temperature: 24 degrees Celsius

Other locations across Bengal reported even colder conditions. Darjeeling in North Bengal registered the coldest reading at 3.5 degrees Celsius. Shantiniketan in South Bengal continued experiencing shivering cold with temperatures dipping below 10 degrees Celsius.

Additional cold spots included Bankura and Kalyani, both recording minimum temperatures of 9.5 degrees Celsius.

Fog Warning Issued

While temperatures prepare to rise, fog conditions will persist in several districts. Thick fog is expected to continue across both North and South Bengal on Sunday and Monday.

The weather office has issued specific fog alerts for multiple districts:

  1. Birbhum
  2. Murshidabad
  3. Nadia
  4. West Burdwan

Additional areas that may experience heavy fog on Sunday include Hooghly, East Burdwan, and North 24 Parganas.

Understanding the Temperature Fluctuations

Weather officials attribute these temperature changes to consecutive western disturbances. These atmospheric patterns are responsible for the shift from recent cold conditions to the anticipated warmer weather.

The combination of rising temperatures and persistent fog creates unique weather conditions that residents should monitor closely in the coming days.
