The forest department has taken action by successfully trapping three leopards involved in these incidents.
Leopardess Trapped in Tarikere After Multiple Dog Attacks
In Tarikere, located within Chikkamagaluru district, a 4-year-old leopardess was captured by forest officials. This leopard had killed over five dogs, including a prized German shepherd. The animals were often tied in front yards to guard arecanut harvests, making them easy targets. The department deployed a cage as part of their strategy. The leopard was finally captured on a Wednesday, bringing much-needed relief to the worried locals.
Male Leopard Captured Near Hiriyur Village
Near Hiriyur village of Bhadravathi town, a 2-3-year-old male leopard was trapped after preying on domestic pets. Forest officials used a dog as bait to lure the leopard. They monitored the situation for a week before making the capture. Following the trapping, the leopard was safely released into a deeper forest zone to reduce future conflicts.
Forest Department Notes Pattern of Targeting Pedigree Breeds
According to BM Ravindra Kumar, the Deputy Conservator of Forests for the Bhadravathi division, the leopards are specifically targeting pedigree dogs. This trend has heightened concerns among dog owners in the region. The problem persists in Chikkamagaluru, where another incident occurred recently.
Third Leopard Trapped in Hirenallur Village
In Hirenallur village, a 6-year-old leopard was trapped on a Thursday. This capture adds to the growing list of leopards removed from areas where they pose a threat to domestic animals. The forest department continues its efforts to manage the situation and protect both wildlife and local communities.
