Middle East Conflict Triggers Commercial LPG Crisis in Koppal District

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has now manifested in a severe disruption of commercial LPG supply across Koppal district, leaving households, hotels, and critical welfare institutions grappling with operational challenges. This supply chain breakdown, directly linked to the geopolitical tensions, is forcing many to resort to alternative cooking methods, including firewood, as stocks dwindle.

Midday Meal Programme for 5,000 Children Severely Impacted

At the forefront of this crisis is the Akshara Dasoha centre in Gavimath, which prepares midday meals for nearly 5,000 children daily. The centre has faced an acute shortage of commercial LPG cylinders for the past three to four days, severely hampering its cooking operations. With supplies virtually halted, officials are struggling to maintain normal meal preparation schedules.

The situation reached a critical point on March 16, when the assistant director and staff of the Akshara Dasoha programme urgently approached a Bharat Gas agency in Koppal city, seeking an immediate supply of cylinders for hostel kitchens. However, the agency manager expressed an inability to assist due to a complete lack of stock, raising serious concerns about the continuity of essential food services for thousands of children.

Medical Students and Hotels Face Operational Hurdles

The ripple effects of the LPG shortage were starkly evident last week at the Koppal Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS). The hostel kitchen was forced to shut down on March 12 after commercial cylinders ran out, leaving approximately 360 medical students dependent on local hotels for their meals. KIMS director Dr. Vijayanath Itagi confirmed that the issue was resolved later that evening following direct intervention by the district administration.

Simultaneously, a crackdown by the food and civil supplies department officials on March 16 exposed widespread misuse of domestic LPG cylinders by hotels in the city. Authorities seized as many as 12 cylinders from six different establishments. The enforcement drive faced significant resistance, with instances of women sitting on cylinders to prevent their seizure. In response, officials have decided to continue the drive with police protection starting Tuesday.

Authorities Appeal for Calm Amid Growing Concerns

Amid mounting public concern, Deputy Commissioner Dr. Suresh B. Itnal has appealed to residents not to panic. He assured that domestic LPG stocks remain adequate and cautioned against spreading rumours. However, the persistent shortage of commercial LPG continues to disrupt normal operations across the district.

Several establishments, including hotels, have been compelled to trim their menus or switch entirely to alternative cooking methods. Visuals from Koppal show a hotelier preparing food outside his establishment using firewood, highlighting the desperate measures being adopted. The crisis underscores how global conflicts can have direct and immediate impacts on local supply chains and daily life, with authorities now racing to find sustainable solutions to ensure food security and operational continuity for affected institutions.
