Maharashtra Braces for Thunderstorms as IMD Issues District-Wise Forecast
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Mumbai has released a detailed weather forecast predicting thunderstorms, lightning, light to moderate rainfall, and gusty winds of 30–50 kmph at isolated locations across several districts in Maharashtra over the next two days. This weather activity is attributed to moisture incursion from the southern side and a developing circulation system.
Affected Districts and Weather Patterns
According to the IMD, the districts of Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, Solapur, Nanded, Beed, and Parbhani are expected to experience thunderstorm activity on Thursday. Additionally, some ghat areas in south Maharashtra may see thunderstorms, while parts of north Maharashtra could receive light rain or thundershowers.
An IMD scientist explained the meteorological conditions, stating, "Moisture is primarily entering from the south, accompanied by a circulation system. A trough extending from Marathwada to south interior Karnataka is driving the thunderstorm forecast in these districts. On Tuesday, some parts of southern Madhya Maharashtra already reported thunderstorm and light rainfall, though the intensity was moderate."
Pune City Excluded from Warning
Notably, Pune city has not been included in the thunderstorm warning. The IMD scientist clarified, "We have not issued any thunderstorm forecast for Pune city. The Regional Meteorological Centre forecast specifically mentions districts in south Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada."
While parts of Pune district may receive light rain or thundershowers at isolated places on Thursday, no specific warning has been issued for the city. Conditions are anticipated to remain mostly dry thereafter, though IMD officials noted that forecasts could be updated if weather conditions change.
Background and Context
This weather development follows recent reports of thunderstorm and light rainfall in southern Madhya Maharashtra, highlighting the region's susceptibility to such conditions during this period. The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely, providing updates to ensure public safety and awareness.
