Mizoram Governor Leads Plantation on Green Mizoram Day

Aizawl: Mizoram Governor General (retd.) Vijay Kumar Singh spearheaded a plantation drive by planting a sapling of the state tree, Herhse (Mesua ferrea), at Lok Bhavan on Thursday, marking Green Mizoram Day.

Governor Leads by Example

Following the governor's initiative, staff members of the governor's secretariat also participated by planting saplings at the venue. Speaking on the occasion, the governor praised the state for its annual mass tree plantation drive on Green Mizoram Day. He urged citizens to plant as many saplings as possible throughout the current planting season, rather than limiting their efforts to just one day.

Importance of Environmental Conservation

Highlighting the significance of environmental conservation, the governor noted that Mizoram continues to maintain rich forest cover and healthy ecosystems. He emphasized that these forests play a crucial role in regulating the climate, purifying the air, and sustaining the water cycle. In the face of climate change, he called upon the people to actively protect these natural resources.

The governor further encouraged all participants not to restrict their efforts to mere planting but to also ensure proper care and maintenance of the saplings so they grow into healthy, mature trees.

Officials Present

Among those present were Vinod P Kavle, secretary to the governor, and Lalnunsanga Khawlhring, divisional forest officer of Aizawl Forest Division, along with other officials.

Observance at Youth Recreation Hall

Green Mizoram Day was also observed at the Youth Recreation Hall in the Falkland locality of Aizawl on Thursday. The event was graced by state Environment, Forests and Climate Change Minister Lalthansanga, with the theme “Trees are green gold, The roots of all life.”

High Court Participation

Justice Ashutosh Kumar, Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, led a mass planting of tree saplings to mark the day at the Gauhati High Court Office premises in Aizawl, organized by the Mizoram State Legal Services Authority.
