Nagpur Sizzles at 44°C, Vidarbha Endures Extreme Heatwave Conditions
Nagpur experienced a blistering Friday as temperatures soared to a season-high 44°C, marking the hottest day so far this year. The mercury climbed rapidly, reaching this peak by early afternoon and maintaining intense, heatwave-like conditions throughout the evening, causing significant discomfort across the Vidarbha region.
IMD Issues Severe Heatwave Warning for Saturday
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has escalated its alert, issuing a formal heatwave warning for Saturday. Forecasts indicate temperatures are likely to rise further, potentially exceeding 45°C. This escalation underscores the severity of the ongoing heat stress affecting the area.
However, a mild respite appears on the horizon. The IMD has also predicted thunderstorms and rainfall for Monday and Tuesday, which are expected to bring some relief from the oppressive heat starting early next week.
Vidarbha Cities Rank Among Global and National Hotspots
Friday's heatwave positioned several Vidarbha cities prominently on both national and global scales:
- Amravati and Wardha both recorded 44.4°C, tying as the second-hottest places in India, just behind Banda in Uttar Pradesh. They also ranked among the top three hottest locations worldwide.
- Nagpur, at 44°C, secured the sixth position on the list of the world's hottest places.
- Other regional hotspots included Akola (44.1°C), Washim (44°C), and Chandrapur (43.6°C), which ranked 5th, 9th, and 11th globally, respectively.
- Additional districts such as Gondia, Yavatmal, and Brahmapuri were also among the hottest places in the country, highlighting the widespread nature of the heatwave across Vidarbha.
Temperature Anomalies and Nighttime Discomfort
Data analysis reveals that temperatures across Vidarbha remained significantly elevated, with deviations of 2 to 4°C above normal levels. This indicates widespread heat stress impacting the population. Specific departures from normal included:
- Washim: +4.0°C
- Amravati: +3.7°C
- Nagpur: +3.4°C
- Wardha: +3.1°C
- Akola: +2.8°C
Nighttime offered little relief from the scorching conditions. Yavatmal recorded a high minimum temperature of 30°C, which is approximately 5.3°C above the normal range, exacerbating discomfort and health risks during what should be cooler hours.
The combination of daytime peaks and elevated nighttime temperatures underscores the critical need for precautionary measures as the region braces for even hotter conditions on Saturday before the anticipated weather change early next week.
