Nagpur Municipal Corporation Intensifies Heat Preparedness with Strategic Partnership
As peak summer approaches, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has significantly escalated its heat preparedness efforts by entering into a strategic collaboration with the International Forum for Environment, Sustainability & Technology (iFOREST). This partnership is designed to strengthen the city's existing heat action plan and develop a comprehensive Integrated Heat and Cooling Action Plan (IHCAP).
High-Level Meeting Sets the Stage for Coordinated Action
The collaboration was formally announced during a high-level interdepartmental meeting chaired by Municipal Commissioner Vipin Itankar. This crucial gathering brought together senior officials from key departments, including health, fire services, town planning, public health engineering, traffic police, and social welfare. The primary objective was to chart out both immediate and long-term strategies to address the dual challenge of escalating temperatures and increasing cooling demand in Nagpur.
Immediate Enhancements and Long-Term Roadmap
Over the next two months, iFOREST will work closely with NMC to enhance the existing heat action plan, which was originally prepared by the health department. This enhancement will focus on practical, on-ground interventions aimed at reducing heat risks during the ongoing summer season. Simultaneously, the organization will commence the preparation of Nagpur's first-ever Integrated Heat and Cooling Action Plan. This plan is expected to provide a long-term, systemic roadmap to tackle extreme heat and manage the city's rising cooling needs effectively.
Prioritizing Vulnerable Populations
Officials have emphasized that the initiative will prioritize the protection of vulnerable groups who are most exposed to heat stress. These groups include residents of informal settlements, outdoor workers, traffic personnel, and low-income communities. Municipal Commissioner Vipin Itankar highlighted the necessity of this focus, stating, "There is a need for scientifically designed interventions aligned with citizens' needs to effectively tackle the city's growing heat stress." He further stressed the importance of coordinated action across various departments to ensure comprehensive protection.
Three-Year Partnership for Implementation and Resilience
The partnership between NMC and iFOREST is structured as a three-year commitment that will support not only the planning but also the implementation of the IHCAP. This extended timeframe is intended to enable Nagpur to build long-term resilience against extreme heat events. The initiative is being undertaken under a memorandum of understanding between iFOREST and the Maharashtra government's environment and climate change department, underscoring its official and strategic nature.

With this proactive move, Nagpur is positioning itself among the first cities in India to transition from a conventional heat action plan to an integrated framework.
