Nashik District Allocates Rs20.35 Crore to Address Escalating Human-Leopard Conflict
The Nashik District Planning Committee (DPC) has officially sanctioned a substantial allocation of Rs20.35 crore to the forest department. This funding is specifically designated to tackle the growing human-wildlife conflict, particularly involving leopards, which has intensified across the district in recent months. The primary objective is to modernize rescue operations and enhance the safety of both citizens and livestock through advanced technological interventions.
Critical Situation Demands Immediate Action
Human-leopard conflicts in Nashik have reached a critical juncture, with frequent attacks reported in rural areas as well as peri-urban pockets. The situation has prompted urgent measures from district authorities to prevent further incidents and ensure community safety. District Collector Ayush Prasad emphasized that the funds, which have been reallocated from the 2025–26 District Annual Plan, will facilitate a comprehensive upgrade of both technological infrastructure and operational capabilities.
Technological Upgrades for Enhanced Surveillance
According to Collector Prasad, a significant portion of the allocated funds will be directed towards deploying state-of-the-art surveillance systems. This includes the installation of AI-enabled cameras, drones, and GPS-linked camera traps designed to monitor leopard movements in real-time. These tools are expected to provide forest officials with critical data to predict and prevent potential conflicts before they escalate.
Strengthening Rapid Response and Support Systems
In addition to surveillance, the funding will bolster Rapid Response Teams (RRT) by equipping them with high-tech tranquilizing guns, specialized nets, and heavy-duty cages. Furthermore, the initiative will support the construction of dedicated rescue centers, base camps, and centralized control rooms to enable 24/7 monitoring and swift intervention during emergencies.

"With this Rs20 crore investment, we are providing our forest officials with the best possible tools, ranging from AI monitoring to specialized medical supplies, to ensure logical and effective resolutions to these encounters."

This financial commitment represents Nashik's most significant effort to date in adopting a technology-driven strategy to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts. The goal is to foster safer coexistence between the expanding leopard population and local communities, addressing both immediate threats and long-term environmental challenges.
Recent Initiatives and Future Prospects
Prior to this allocation, the district had already taken preliminary steps by utilizing an emergency grant of Rs50 lakh from the Disaster Management Fund. This earlier funding was used to procure 10 specialized vehicles for transporting leopard cages, along with an 11th rescue vehicle donated through a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, which was recently handed over to the forest department.
