Odisha Battles Intense Heatwave as Temperatures Soar Above 43°C

Bhubaneswar: A relentless heatwave has tightened its grip on western Odisha, with Titlagarh in Balangir district emerging as the hottest spot in the state, recording a scorching 43.5°C on Friday. This extreme weather condition has persisted for the past two to three days, causing widespread discomfort and prompting urgent administrative actions.

Widespread High Temperatures Across Western Odisha

Mercury levels have surged dramatically across the region, with ten additional towns in this pocket experiencing daytime temperatures ranging from 40°C to over 42°C. Balangir itself registered the second-highest temperature in the state at 42.3°C, highlighting the severity of the heatwave. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a stern forecast, predicting that this heatwave warning will continue in nine western Odisha districts over the next three days, starting from Saturday.

The affected districts include:

  • Boudh

Furthermore, the IMD has raised concerns about warm night conditions, issuing warnings for three districts: Sundargarh, Balangir, and Sambalpur. This combination of high daytime and nighttime temperatures poses significant health risks to residents.

Administrative Response and School Closures

In response to the IMD's heatwave alert and the sharp rise in temperatures, the district administration of Balangir has taken proactive measures. An official report confirms that schools within its jurisdiction have been declared closed for the next three days, until April 21, to protect students from the hazardous heat. This decision underscores the gravity of the situation and prioritizes public safety.

Extended Weather Warnings Across Odisha

The IMD bulletin extends beyond the heatwave, indicating that hot and humid conditions will persist in 12 coastal Odisha districts for the next six days. Additionally, a thunderstorm activity warning, accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds, is in effect for some districts for five days starting Saturday. Manorama Mohanty, head of the regional IMD centre, explained that the current wind patterns are likely to support intense heat conditions in western Odisha pockets for at least three more days, exacerbating the crisis.

Government Alert and Advisory Measures

Following the IMD's heat warning, the state government has placed district collectors on high alert and issued an advisory to implement necessary steps. The office of the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has formally communicated with collectors through a letter, as confirmed by a government official. This coordinated effort aims to mitigate the impact of the heatwave and ensure preparedness across the affected regions.

The escalating temperatures in Odisha serve as a stark reminder of the challenges posed by extreme weather events, necessitating vigilant monitoring and swift administrative responses to safeguard communities.
