Cyclone Ditwah Triggers Red Alert: Chennai Schools Shut on Dec 2
Red Alert in Chennai as Cyclone Ditwah Brings Heavy Rain

A severe cyclonic storm is set to unleash heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu, prompting authorities to declare a state of high alert. The capital city of Chennai is directly in the path of the weather system, leading to preemptive closures and warnings for residents.

Red Alert Issued, Educational Institutions Closed

The district administration in Chennai has taken decisive action in response to the impending severe weather. All schools and colleges within the Chennai district will remain closed on Tuesday, December 2, 2025. This directive was officially announced through a notification citing the influence of Cyclone Ditwah and the associated heavy rainfall warning.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has escalated its warnings, placing several regions under the highest level of alert. A Red Alert is currently in effect for parts of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kancheepuram. This signifies that severe weather conditions are imminent and pose a significant risk to life and property.

Additionally, an Orange Alert has been issued for areas including Ranipet, Tirupattur, Villupuram, Cuddalore, and the union territory of Puducherry. Residents in these zones have been advised to exercise extreme caution.

Cyclone Ditwah's Path and Immediate Impact

The current situation stems from Cyclone Ditwah, which initially battered Sri Lanka before weakening into a deep depression late on Sunday. However, its residual influence continues to drive intense weather activity over the region. On Monday, Chennai and its neighbouring districts experienced a fresh spell of heavy rain as the system approached.

The IMD has issued specific warnings about the potential hazards. The forecasted heavy rain is likely to cause waterlogging, render roads slippery, and lead to significant traffic disruptions across the alerted districts. Citizens are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and stay updated with official bulletins.

Extended Rainy Forecast for the Region

The wet spell is expected to persist beyond the immediate cyclone threat. According to the latest IMD bulletin, the weather in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry is likely to remain rainy from December 3 through December 7.

The forecast predicts light to moderate rainfall at a few places, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning at one or two locations over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Karaikal area. This indicates that while the peak intensity from Cyclone Ditwah may pass, the region should prepare for a continued period of unsettled weather.

Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and have disaster response teams on standby. The public is advised to heed all safety warnings, avoid low-lying areas, and follow instructions from local administration to ensure their safety during this severe weather episode.
