Spotted Deer Fatally Struck by Speeding Vehicle in Dhanbad

In a tragic incident highlighting the dangers of road traffic to wildlife, a male spotted deer was found dead near the Tundi forest area along the Dhanbad-Tundi road in Dhanbad district on Sunday morning. The accident occurred as the deer attempted to cross the road, only to be hit by a speeding car, leaving the animal with critical injuries.

Driver Flees Scene, Leaves Vehicle Behind

According to local villagers who witnessed the event, the vehicle involved in the collision stopped briefly after the impact. However, the driver and another occupant quickly abandoned the car, which bore a Bihar registration number, and fled the scene. Despite efforts by locals to apprehend the accused, they managed to escape, leaving the injured deer behind.

Delayed Medical Care Leads to Deer's Death

The villagers promptly informed the forest department about the incident. Officials arrived at the location and transported the severely injured deer to a nearby veterinary hospital for urgent treatment. Unfortunately, due to the absence of a doctor at the hospital at that time, timely medical intervention could not be provided. By the time a doctor arrived, the deer had succumbed to its injuries, underscoring the critical need for immediate wildlife rescue services.

Forest Department Takes Action

Divisional Forest Officer of Dhanbad, Vikash Paliwal, confirmed that the vehicle involved in the accident has been seized by authorities. A formal case has been registered in connection with the incident. "An investigation is underway to identify and apprehend those responsible for this unfortunate event," stated Paliwal, emphasizing the department's commitment to enforcing wildlife protection laws.

Recent Similar Incident in the Region

This is not an isolated case of wildlife fatalities on roads in the area. On March 8, a female spotted deer was found dead near Upper Bazar in Chirkunda under the Maithon region. That incident is also suspected to have been caused by a road accident, pointing to a recurring issue of vehicle-wildlife collisions in forested zones.

The repeated occurrences of such accidents raise concerns about road safety measures near wildlife habitats and the effectiveness of existing protocols for emergency veterinary care. Authorities are urged to enhance monitoring and implement stricter speed limits in these sensitive areas to prevent further loss of precious wildlife.
