Chandigarh Names Striped Tiger Butterfly as Official State Symbol
The State Board of Wildlife in Chandigarh made a significant decision on Monday. During a meeting chaired by UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, the board declared the Striped Tiger Butterfly as the official State Butterfly of the Union Territory.
Promoting Biodiversity and Public Awareness
This declaration forms a key part of the board's ongoing efforts to promote biodiversity conservation. It also aims to increase public awareness about wildlife in Chandigarh. The move highlights the region's commitment to protecting its natural heritage.
Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria presided over the meeting. He reviewed six important agenda items and guided discussions on wildlife conservation priorities. Kataria also assessed the status of decisions from previous meetings.
Focus on Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary
A particular focus was placed on the progress of work related to the Eco-Sensitive Zone around the Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary. The Administrator emphasized the need for regular monitoring. He advised that meetings of the State Board of Wildlife should be held every six months to ensure consistent oversight.
Following the official declaration, the board issued clear directives. The Department of Forest and Wildlife must launch extensive public awareness campaigns. These campaigns will educate people about the new State Butterfly and its ecological importance.
Public Awareness Campaigns Planned
The awareness efforts will take place at prominent public locations. Railway stations, tourist spots, and other high-traffic areas will feature educational materials. The goal is to inform residents and visitors about the Striped Tiger Butterfly's role in the local ecosystem.
During the meeting, Board member Dr. SS Grewal highlighted the successful Sukhomajri Project. He emphasized the crucial role of the Sukhna Lake watershed. Grewal commended the Forest Department's ongoing work in soil and moisture conservation.
The department's efforts in silt retention and maintaining regular water inflow into Sukhna Lake are vital. These actions contribute directly to the lake's long-term sustainability and health.
New Instructions for Wildlife Habitat Improvement
Administrator Kataria issued further instructions to the Department of Forest and Wildlife. He directed the department to take proactive steps to improve wildlife habitats across the entire Union Territory. This initiative will support various species and enhance local biodiversity.
Kataria also asked the department to explore an exciting possibility. Officials should investigate establishing a dedicated wildlife learning centre for the public and students. This could take the form of a Biological Park or a similar enclosure.
Any such centre must operate in full compliance with prescribed rules and statutory provisions. The focus will be on education and fostering a deeper connection between people and local wildlife.
The declaration of the Striped Tiger Butterfly marks a proud moment for Chandigarh. It underscores the territory's dedication to environmental stewardship and public education. Residents can now recognize this beautiful insect as an official symbol of their region's natural wealth.
