Trichy Forest Department Conducts Educational Nature Camp at Melur Butterfly Park

The Forest Department in Trichy successfully organized a one-day nature camp at the Butterfly Park in Melur, Trichy, with the primary objective of instilling environmental awareness among school students. This initiative aimed to educate young minds about the critical importance of biodiversity, the impacts of climate change, and the urgent need for the conservation of forests and natural ecosystems.

Engaging Students from Government Schools

The camp brought together a total of 50 enthusiastic students from classes 8 to 11, representing five government schools across the region. The participating institutions included Government High School Vellur, Government Higher Secondary Schools Valadi, Amoor, and Sirugambur, as well as Girls Higher Secondary School Srirangam. This diverse group of participants engaged in a series of interactive sessions and hands-on field activities designed to highlight the vital importance of protecting wildlife and maintaining ecological balance.

Expert-Led Sessions on Biodiversity and Conservation

Ornithologist S Muthusamy delivered an informative talk on the critical role that birds play within ecosystems, emphasizing their contributions to pollination and seed dispersal. Following this presentation, students participated in a hands-on bird identification walk, which sparked significant interest in birdwatching and fostered a deeper appreciation for avian species.

Forest Range Officer J Ravi provided insights into species interdependence and discussed major threats to biodiversity, such as habitat loss and pollution. Additionally, Green Fellow S Balakrishnan from the Trichy collectorate demonstrated practical ways to combat plastic pollution by promoting the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle.

Interactive Activities and Practical Demonstrations

The day-long camp featured a variety of engaging activities, including:

  • Nursery techniques and tree-planting awareness sessions to encourage afforestation efforts.
  • Butterfly life-cycle demonstrations that illustrated the fascinating metamorphosis process.
  • A student-led release of adult butterflies, allowing participants to witness conservation in action.

Camp Conclusion and Recognition

The event concluded with an interactive quiz on climate change and conservation topics, testing the students' newly acquired knowledge. Winners of the quiz were awarded prizes, and all participants received certificates in recognition of their involvement and commitment to environmental stewardship.

Leadership and Collaborative Efforts

The camp was led by Conservator of Forests R Kanchana from the Trichy circle, with guidance from District Forest Officer S. Krithiga and Assistant Conservator of Forests I Kadhar Basha. This initiative was conducted in partnership with the School Education Department of Trichy, showcasing a collaborative effort to promote environmental education among the youth.
