The United Arab Emirates is bracing for a week of dynamic and unsettled weather conditions, with residents and visitors advised to stay prepared for rainfall, shifting winds, and potential disruptions. The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has forecast a pattern of intermittent showers, cloud cover, and brisk winds affecting multiple regions across the country following initial rains over the weekend.
Weekend Rainfall Sets the Stage
The latest spell of wet weather began late on Saturday night. The initial showers formed over the Arabian Gulf and surrounding islands, before extending to coastal cities including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, and Ras Al Khaimah. By Sunday, the rain had progressed inland, reaching northern and eastern interior areas.
Rainfall intensity varied significantly, creating a patchwork of conditions. The heaviest downpour was recorded at Saqr Port, which received 12.5 millimeters of rain. While satellite data indicated a decline in cloud cover by Monday, concentrating mainly over the sea and some northern areas, the reprieve is expected to be short-lived.
Midweek Forecast: Light to Moderate Showers Expected
The NCM predicts that Tuesday and Wednesday will see light to moderate rainfall, primarily targeting the islands and northern regions. Cloudy skies will persist, with intermittent showers likely over the sea and far northern areas on Wednesday.
This weather system is projected to enter its final phase on Thursday and Friday. Rainfall is anticipated to begin in the western parts late Thursday night, moving towards Abu Dhabi in the early hours of Friday. As Friday progresses, showers are expected to extend to several key areas:
- Northern regions
- Al Ain city
- Eastern areas
By Friday evening, cloud cover is forecast to thin out, mostly disappearing by Saturday. The chance of rain will become low, limited mainly to the far north, though daytime local clouds may still form due to residual atmospheric instability.
Wind, Visibility, and Sea Conditions
Accompanying the rainfall will be significant shifts in wind patterns. Winds are expected to be southeasterly to northeasterly, later turning northwesterly. Speeds will range from moderate to brisk, occasionally becoming strong near cumulonimbus clouds.
These gusty winds may stir up dust and sand, reducing horizontal visibility in some exposed areas. Motorists are advised to exercise caution. Sea conditions will also be affected, ranging from slight to moderate but becoming rough at times, particularly in the Arabian Gulf and the Sea of Oman when clouds are present. Boaters and coastal activities should proceed with care.
Authorities urge the public to stay updated with the latest alerts from the National Centre of Meteorology and to avoid valleys and areas prone to flooding during heavy showers.
