Unseasonal April Deluge Drenches Gujarat's Saurashtra Coast, Disrupts Life
In a dramatic departure from typical April weather, intense unseasonal showers pounded several parts of Saurashtra's coastal belt in Gujarat on Friday, creating monsoon-like scenes across a region that usually singes under scorching heat at this time of year. The unexpected rainfall brought significant disruption to daily life while offering a temporary respite from the blazing summer temperatures that typically peak during this period.
Widespread Rainfall and Waterlogging Across Districts
The entire region, including Kutch, was blanketed by dense clouds from early morning, eventually unleashing rainfall across many parts of Devbhumi Dwarka, Gir Somnath, and Kutch districts. Kalyanpur taluka in Devbhumi Dwarka district recorded 26mm of rain, while wet weather prevailed across all talukas, including Khambhaliya, Bhanvad, and Okhamandal. The showers left pools of water on roads in numerous towns and villages, accompanied by strong winds that made commuting particularly difficult for residents and travelers alike.
In Veraval, residents woke to a wet and thunderous morning that left low-lying areas such as Subhash Road and Tapeshwar Road severely waterlogged. Unseasonal showers were also reported across various parts of Kutch, including Gandhidham, Anjar, and Bhachau. The rainfall activity extended to major cities like Rajkot and Bhavnagar as well, creating unexpected weather patterns across the coastal region.
Community Disruption and Temperature Plunge
In Dwarka, devotees had to rush under temporary canopies for community meals as sudden showers hit the town unexpectedly. Hemal Vayeda, a businessman living in Dwarka town, remarked, "At this time of the year, daytime is typically sweltering in our coastal area. For the last two days, we have been feeling as though the rainy season has set in prematurely."
Meanwhile, daytime temperatures fell significantly across cities and towns, with Rajkot cooling down to 30 degrees Celsius—a remarkable deviation of 9 degrees from normal seasonal expectations. Without this unexpected weather twist, temperatures could have been blazing close to 40 degrees Celsius, highlighting the substantial impact of the unseasonal rainfall.
Meteorological Explanation and Future Forecast
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed this unusual wet spell to an upper-air cyclonic circulation over north Gujarat and a western disturbance over the Afghanistan–Pakistan region. These weather systems are actively aiding cloud formation and triggering scattered showers and thunderstorms across the affected areas.
The weather is likely to remain unsettled as a fresh western disturbance is expected to affect northwest India from April 7, potentially bringing another spell of rain and gusty winds to parts of Gujarat. This continued atmospheric activity suggests that residents should prepare for more unpredictable weather patterns in the coming days.
Cooler April Forecast for Gujarat
IMD has forecast normal-to-below-normal maximum temperatures in April and for the April-June period across much of Gujarat. The IMD stated, "During April 2026, monthly maximum temperatures are likely to be normal to below normal over many parts of the country." However, the forecast also indicated chances of isolated instances of a rise in heatwave days from April to June in specific parts of Gujarat, suggesting that while current conditions are cooler, the state might still experience periods of intense heat later in the season.
This unusual weather event serves as a reminder of the increasing variability in seasonal patterns and the importance of staying informed about meteorological developments that can significantly impact daily life and agricultural activities in the region.
