An unusual split has emerged in the Indian weather map this week. While the southwest monsoon advances rapidly in southern waters, triggering rain warnings in popular tourist destinations, heatwave conditions persist across large parts of north and central India, according to the latest All India Weather Summary & Forecast Bulletin released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Monsoon Progress and Forecast
The IMD reported that the southwest monsoon has entered larger parts of the southeast Arabian Sea, the Comorin area, the southwest and southeast Bay of Bengal, most parts of the Andaman Sea, and all parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Favorable conditions for further advancement are expected over the next three to four days, with the monsoon likely to reach Kerala around May 26, plus or minus four days considering model error margins.
Heavy Rain Warnings for Tourist Spots
Summer holidaymakers face a tough situation as some of India's most visited monsoon and hill destinations may experience heavy rains, lightning, and thunderstorms throughout the week. A warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for Kerala and Mahe, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, coastal and interior Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Tourist hotspots like Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Karnataka, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands may face temporary road closures, waterlogging, low visibility, and landslide threats. The bulletin also warns of road traffic disruption due to waterlogging on roads and underpasses.
Thunderstorm and Heatwave Warnings
The IMD has also issued warnings of thunderstorm activity accompanied by lightning and wind gusts up to 60 kmph in Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, Telangana, Kerala, Karnataka, and northeast India. Hailstorm activity is predicted in isolated pockets of Karnataka. For beach enthusiasts and travelers, sea conditions will be unfriendly. Squally winds blowing at speeds between 40 and 50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph, have been forecast in the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, the Kerala and Karnataka coasts, the Gulf of Mannar, the Sri Lankan coast, and major sections of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. Fishing communities from coastal areas of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Lakshadweep have been advised to avoid venturing out to sea.
Extreme Heat in North and Central India
As southern and northeastern regions gear up for rainfall, extreme weather conditions prevail in northern and central India. Heatwaves to severe heatwaves are likely in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh. The highest maximum temperature in the country was recorded at Banda, Uttar Pradesh, reaching 47.6 degrees Celsius.
Seven-Day Rainfall Forecast
The seven-day rainfall forecast indicates continued widespread rain activity in Kerala, Lakshadweep, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and northeastern states. In contrast, areas like Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and most of western Uttar Pradesh may remain largely dry despite soaring temperatures.
