The plains of Uttarakhand are set to experience several more days of challenging weather, with the meteorological department issuing an advisory warning of persistent dense fog and cold day conditions. Residents and travelers across multiple districts should brace for significantly reduced visibility and unusually low daytime temperatures over the coming days.
Widespread Fog and Chilling Days Ahead
According to the latest weather advisory, dense fog is likely to persist across the plains of Uttarakhand for the next three to four days. The phenomenon is expected to be particularly intense in specific districts. Dense to very dense fog may occur at a few places in Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts, as well as in the plain areas of Nainital, Champawat, Pauri, and Dehradun districts.
Adding to the discomfort, cold day conditions are likely to prevail at isolated places in Udham Singh Nagar. This means daytime temperatures will remain significantly below normal, creating a persistent chill despite it being daytime hours.
Official Advisory and Safety Precautions
C S Tomar, director of the Regional Meteorological Centre, provided detailed insights to TOI. "Foggy conditions in the plain areas of the state are likely to continue for the next 3-4 days," Tomar stated. He emphasized the risks for the public, noting that reduced visibility during dense fog often leads to road accidents, especially during early morning and late-night hours.
In light of these hazards, authorities have issued clear guidance for the public. People are advised to:
- Follow all traffic advisories diligently.
- Use fog lights while driving.
- Take all necessary precautions during the prevailing cold and foggy conditions.
A Brief Respite Followed by Dry Weather
The meteorological forecast also indicates a minor weather system that will briefly alter conditions. A feeble western disturbance will affect the state's weather during the December 20–21 period. This system is expected to bring light rain and snowfall to some areas.
However, this will be a short-lived change. Dry weather conditions are expected to prevail across Uttarakhand after this system moves away, likely returning the focus to the fog and cold. Officials continue to monitor the situation and urge residents, especially commuters, to remain vigilant until the fog lifts.
