Varanasi Sizzles at 44.7°C as Heat Wave Intensifies, IMD Warning

Varanasi: Scorching heat accompanied by strong surface winds continued to grip the holy city on Saturday, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heat wave warning and predicted persistent strong surface winds during daytime over the next few days.

Temperature Records

According to the IMD, the maximum temperature in Varanasi was recorded at 44.7 degrees Celsius, which is nearly 3.9 degrees above the normal for this time of year. The minimum temperature settled at 28.6 degrees Celsius, approximately 2 degrees above the seasonal average.

Daily Progression of Heat

The day started with clear skies, but the intensity of the heat increased steadily as hours passed. Hot winds began sweeping through the city soon after 9 am, and by 11 am, residents could distinctly feel loo-like conditions. By afternoon, the weather turned extremely harsh, with blazing heat making outdoor movement difficult. Even nights have become uncomfortably warm, though a mild easterly breeze during early morning hours offered slight respite.

Public Reaction

Residents expressed their distress over the relentless heat. Rajesh Mishra, a resident of the Lanka area, said, “Stepping outside after noon feels like walking into a furnace. Even the wind is burning hot.” Another local, Sunita Devi from Sigra, added, “The heat has become unbearable over the past few days. People are avoiding going out unless it is absolutely necessary.”

Impact on Livelihoods

Shopkeepers and roadside vendors were also seen struggling with the intense weather conditions. Arif Khan, a tea vendor near Godowlia, noted, “Business has been badly affected as fewer people are venturing out during the afternoon hours.” The extreme heat has forced many to alter their daily routines, with markets seeing reduced footfall during peak heat hours.

The IMD has advised residents to take precautions such as staying hydrated, avoiding direct sun exposure during afternoon hours, and wearing light clothing. The heat wave is expected to persist, with strong surface winds adding to the discomfort. Authorities have urged people to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines.
