Yavatmal Forest Department Cracks Down on Unauthorized Resort Construction in Tipeshwar Sanctuary

The forest department in Yavatmal district has taken decisive action against unauthorized construction activities within the eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) of the Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary. In a significant move, the department has issued notices to 15 resort and tourism operators, directing them to immediately halt all construction and commercial operations in this protected area.

Immediate Suspension Orders Issued

On March 28, the deputy conservator of forests (DCF) for the Pandharkawda Forest Division, Yashwant Bahale, served notices to the resort owners. These notices mandate an immediate cessation of all unauthorized construction and commercial activities until proper permissions are obtained. The Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Pandharkawda, along the Vidarbha-Telangana border, and its surrounding area was officially declared an ESZ by the Central Government on September 18, 2018.

According to regulations, any construction or commercial venture within an ESZ requires prior clearance from the competent committee. However, official sources reveal that the resort owners proceeded with construction without securing mandatory approval from the District Level Monitoring Committee, which is headed by the district collector.

Investigation Uncovers Violations

The matter came to light after forest staff reported being barred from moving freely within the ESZ area by resort owners. This obstruction raised alarms, prompting DCF Bahale to initiate a thorough investigation into the construction activities. The probe uncovered several violations:

  • In some instances, resort owners had obtained permissions only for land beautification but had not secured approvals for actual construction.
  • Several operators had already commenced commercial activities, blatantly disregarding environmental norms and the ESZ regulations.

This unauthorized development poses a significant threat to the sanctuary's fragile ecosystem, which is home to diverse wildlife and requires stringent protection measures.

Strict Action Threatened for Non-Compliance

DCF Bahale has emphasized that any failure to comply with the directives to suspend construction and commercial activities will result in strict legal action. Violators will face penalties under the provisions of the Environment Protection Act, which can include hefty fines and potential imprisonment. The forest department is committed to enforcing environmental laws to preserve the integrity of the Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary and its surrounding eco-sensitive zone.

This crackdown highlights the ongoing challenges in balancing tourism development with conservation efforts in protected areas. Authorities are urging all stakeholders to adhere to regulatory frameworks to prevent further ecological damage.
