In a powerful statement for environmental consciousness, a wedding in Mangaluru has set a remarkable benchmark for sustainable celebrations. The union of Roshan Rai, founder and CEO of Carbon Mandal Sustainability Consulting Services LLP, and Rohitha, a senior bioinformatics support scientist at Illumina, was conducted as a comprehensive zero-waste event.
A Wedding Vow to the Planet
The couple's commitment was evident from the very beginning. Their wedding invitations explicitly declared the celebrations would adhere to zero-waste principles, showcasing a deep sense of environmental responsibility. To turn this vision into reality, they enlisted the expertise of Mangala Resource Management Pvt Ltd, which implemented a full-scale scientific waste management system across all wedding functions.
The Numbers Behind the Green Celebration
The scale of the achievement is quantified in the total waste processed. A staggering 1,333 kilograms of waste was collected, segregated, and processed from the various events. The waste was meticulously tracked per function:
- Mehendi Function: 375 kg
- Sangeeth Function: 91 kg
- Marriage Ceremony: 415 kg
- Puja Function: 445 kg
- Guest Room Waste: 7 kg
Every piece of waste was handled through source-level segregation, supported by continuous on-ground supervision. This meticulous approach ensured that the maximum possible material was recovered for recycling and composting, drastically reducing what ended up in a landfill.
From Wedding Waste to Resource
Dilraj Alva, Managing Director of Mangala Resource Management, detailed the post-event processing. He expressed gratitude to the couple for their trust. The wet waste collected was channeled for conversion into hermi compost, an organic fertilizer. The dry waste was sent to a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) unit, where it was further segregated and sent for recycling.
This initiative powerfully demonstrates that with careful planning and professional support, large-scale social gatherings can seamlessly integrate sustainability. Alva noted the growing trend, stating that zero-waste weddings are increasingly seen as a meaningful step toward sustainable living in an era of heightened environmental awareness. The event stands as a practical model, proving that joyous celebrations need not come at the expense of the planet.
