Fifteen Indian nationals were killed on Saturday after a tourist speedboat capsized near Phu Quoc Island in southern Vietnam. The vessel, carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members, overturned approximately 400 metres from the shore while returning from Hon May Rut Ngoai Island to An Thoi Port, according to Vietnamese authorities.
Rescue Operation and Casualties
Vietnamese rescue teams, facing rough seas and strong winds, managed to save 21 people. All 15 bodies were later recovered. An investigation has been ordered to determine the cause of the accident. The Indian Embassy in Vietnam confirmed that officials in Hanoi and the Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City are providing assistance to the affected families.
Victims' Regional Breakdown
The embassy stated that among the deceased, 10 hailed from Tamil Nadu, three from Andhra Pradesh, and two from Kerala. Officials are working closely with Vietnamese authorities to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief on social media, stating he was "extremely saddened" by the incident and praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. He assured that the Indian Embassy and Consulate in Vietnam are extending all possible assistance and remain in close contact with Vietnamese authorities. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi urged the Ministry of External Affairs to coordinate closely with Vietnamese officials to ensure all rescue efforts are maximized and that affected families receive necessary support.
