Bareilly storm kills farmer, injures six, disrupts utilities

A 25-year-old farmer died and six others were injured as a violent storm swept through Bareilly district on Wednesday, uprooting trees, damaging property, and disrupting power and water supply across parts of the city.

Fatal Incident in Nakatiya

Kehri Singh was sleeping in the courtyard of his house in Nakatiya under Cantt police station limits when strong winds ripped a solar panel off a neighboring house and hurled it onto him, causing fatal injuries. Savita, 17, who was sleeping nearby, suffered fractures in both legs in the same incident.

Tree Fall at Ashram

In Sant Muni Ashram in the Cantt area, a peepal tree was uprooted and fell on four people sleeping under it. Harish, 26, suffered a fractured arm, while Ravi, 30, sustained injuries to his head and back. Pappu, 75, suffered serious head injuries and remains critical. Rambhari, 50, was discharged after receiving first aid.

Disruption of Essential Services

The storm disrupted electricity supply after power poles were damaged and overhead lines snapped. Several localities remained without electricity overnight, while water supply was affected in some areas after pumping stations lost power. Electricity department teams worked through the night to restore supply and clear fallen trees from roads, residential colonies, and markets. Services were being restored in phases on Thursday morning.

Widespread Damage

The storm also caused damage in several parts of the city. A large advertising hoarding collapsed on Pilibhit Bypass, the main gate of a wedding hall was damaged, a roof collapsed in Shyamganj, and solar panels were uprooted in Malookpur. An auto-rickshaw driver was also injured after a tree fell near Satellite Bus Station.

Official Response

Bareilly DM Avinash Singh said, “All departments are working in coordination to restore normalcy in the city.”
