Denmark is set to acquire 200 AGM-158B/B-2 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles-Extended Range (JASSM-ER) for its F-35 fighter fleet, following approval from the US Department of State. The deal, valued at approximately $842 million, includes the missiles and associated equipment, with Lockheed Martin as the principal contractor.
Enhancing Denmark's Defense Capabilities
The US Department of State stated that the sale will bolster Denmark's ability to address current and future threats by equipping the Royal Danish Air Force (RDAF) with long-range precision strike capabilities. This enhancement will significantly strengthen the operational effectiveness of Denmark's F-35 Lightning II fighter jets, which are replacing the ageing F-16 Fighting Falcons. Denmark, a founding partner in the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program, has ordered 43 aircraft.
Strategic Importance and Russian Concerns
Denmark holds a strategic position in northern Europe, controlling access to the Baltic Sea through the Danish Straits. Its security landscape is increasingly influenced by Russia's expanding military presence in northern Europe and the Arctic. Danish officials have highlighted aggressive Russian actions in the Baltic Sea. Thomas Ahrenkiel, Director of the Danish Defence Intelligence Service, reported at a press conference that Russian warships have engaged in dangerous maneuvers, including sailing on collision courses with Danish vessels and targeting Danish helicopters and naval vessels with tracking radars and weapons.
About the JASSM-ER Missile
The AGM-158B JASSM-ER is among the most advanced air-launched cruise missiles in the Western arsenal, designed to strike heavily defended, high-value targets such as command centers, air defense systems, airbases, and critical infrastructure. Key specifications include:
- Range exceeding 900 km with subsonic speed
- Stealth design to reduce radar detection
- 1,000-pound (450 kg) penetrating warhead for hardened targets
- Guidance via inertial navigation, GPS, and imaging infrared seeker
- Turbofan engine propulsion
- Compatibility with F-35, F-16, F-15E, B-1B, B-2, and B-52 aircraft
Implications for NATO and Regional Security
Denmark's acquisition of JASSM-ER missiles marks a significant upgrade to its long-range strike capabilities amid growing security challenges in northern Europe and the Arctic. When integrated with the F-35's stealth and sensor systems, the missile will enable Denmark to deter potential adversaries, contribute more effectively to NATO operations, and strike high-value targets from beyond the reach of modern air defenses.
This development underscores Denmark's commitment to maintaining a robust defense posture in a region where Russian military activity continues to escalate.
