Drone Strike on Sudan Market Kills 28, Injures 23

A drone attack on Tuesday killed at least 28 people and wounded 23 others when it struck a market in the paramilitary-controlled town of Ghubaysh in West Kordofan, according to a medical source and three witnesses who spoke to AFP.

Attack Details

Two witnesses reported that the drone hit a crowded restaurant at the town's main market, attributing the attack to Sudan's army. The army has been engaged in a conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023. Another witness described a sequence where the drone first struck an RSF vehicle, killing three people on board and destroying the vehicle, before then hitting the restaurant.

Casualties and Response

A medical source confirmed that casualties were taken to Ghubaysh hospital. The attack underscores the brutal nature of the ongoing civil war in Sudan, which has caused widespread devastation and a humanitarian crisis.

The RSF has controlled Ghubaysh and much of West Kordofan since the conflict began. The Sudanese army has frequently used drone strikes against RSF positions, often resulting in civilian casualties. This attack is among the deadliest in the region in recent months.

The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF has led to thousands of deaths and displaced millions. International efforts to broker a ceasefire have so far failed.
