India may revisit conventional missile strategy: Defence Secy

India is likely to revisit its conventional missile approach as global conflicts and Pakistan’s military developments reshape strategic thinking, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh said on Thursday. Speaking at the ANI National Security Summit 2.0, he emphasised the growing role of advanced weapons systems and robust air defence capabilities in modern warfare.

Missiles in operational scenarios

Singh noted that missiles are no longer confined to strategic deterrence but are increasingly deployed in operational scenarios. This shift, driven by evolving global conflict patterns, requires India to adapt its conventional missile strategy accordingly. He stressed that building such capabilities would go hand in hand with scaling up production.

Need for wider industry participation

The defence secretary highlighted the necessity of expanding manufacturing beyond reliance on a single public-sector unit and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). He called for broader industry participation to meet future defence requirements, ensuring a more resilient and diversified production base.
