Indian National Arrested by ICE Following California Release in Hit-and-Run Incident
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested an Indian national, Aman Kumar, who was charged with a felony hit-and-run that critically injured a four-year-old boy in Fresno, California. Kumar had been living in the United States illegally and was released from custody by California authorities before ICE apprehended him.
Incident Details
The hit-and-run occurred on April 28, 2026, at approximately 8 p.m. The four-year-old victim was playing on a swing set at his home but wandered onto the road that crossed his yard. Several drivers stopped to avoid hitting the child, but Kumar swerved into a bike lane in an attempt to bypass traffic and ultimately struck the victim. He briefly stopped and then sped away. The boy was hospitalized and is expected to survive.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Kumar was arrested the next day by the Fresno Sheriff’s Department and charged with felony hit and run causing death or injury. However, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) claimed that sanctuary politicians in California released the criminal illegal alien from jail. On May 13, ICE arrested Kumar outside the California Superior Court, County of Fresno.
“This monster who almost killed a 4-year-old boy has been charged with a felony hit and run,” said Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis. “Sanctuary politicians in California released this criminal illegal alien from jail back onto the streets. Thanks to the brave men and women of ICE law enforcement, this criminal illegal alien was arrested outside a criminal court. DHS is calling on Governor Gavin Newsom and his fellow California sanctuary politicians to stop putting American lives at risk by releasing criminals into our communities to commit more crimes and hurt more innocent people.”
Immigration Status
The DHS alleged that Kumar illegally entered the United States in California in 2023 and was released by the Biden Administration. ICE confirmed that Kumar now faces immigration proceedings, stating, “ICE did what FPD couldn’t and put him back behind bars, he now faces immigration proceedings.”
The case has reignited debates over sanctuary policies in California, with federal authorities criticizing the state’s approach to handling undocumented immigrants charged with crimes.
