The death toll in the tragic boat accident in Madhya Pradesh has risen to 12, as rescue operations continue for the one person still missing. The incident took place in the Narmada river, near the town of Barwani.
Details of the Incident
The boat, carrying around 20 passengers, capsized on Sunday afternoon. Initial reports indicate that the vessel was overcrowded and may have hit a submerged object. Rescue teams, including divers from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local authorities, have been deployed to search for survivors and retrieve bodies.
Rescue and Recovery Efforts
So far, 11 bodies have been recovered, while one person remains missing. The search operation has been hampered by strong currents and murky water. Local officials have stated that the rescue efforts will continue until the missing person is found.
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased. He also directed officials to ensure that all possible assistance is provided to the affected families.
Investigation Ordered
The state government has ordered a probe into the incident. Preliminary investigations suggest that the boat was not equipped with life jackets and may have been operating without proper safety measures. The boat owner has been detained for questioning.
This tragedy has once again raised questions about safety regulations for river transport in the region. Local residents have complained about the lack of safety equipment and overcrowding on boats.
Community in Mourning
The village where most of the victims hailed from is in mourning. Families have gathered at the riverbank, hoping for news of their loved ones. Local authorities have set up a help desk and are providing counseling to the bereaved families.
The incident has also sparked a debate on the need for stricter enforcement of safety norms for water vessels. Experts have called for mandatory life jackets, regular inspections, and capacity limits to prevent such accidents in the future.
