NHPC to Release Additional Water from Parbati-II Pulga Dam, Advises Public to Stay Away from Riverbank
NHPC to Release More Water from Parbati-II Pulga Dam

The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has announced the release of additional water from the Pulga Dam of the 800 MW Parbati-II Hydroelectric Power Station in Sainj valley, Kullu district, starting Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 4:00 pm. This decision follows a continuous rise in the reservoir level and the possibility of heavy inflows.

Water Release Details and Total Discharge

According to the NHPC advisory, approximately 30 cumecs (cubic metres per second) of additional water will be released through the dam's radial gates into the Parbati River. With this release, the total discharge into the river—including the existing environmental flow (e-flow) and the radial gate discharge—will increase from around 330 cumecs to approximately 360 cumecs.

NHPC stated that if the inflow into the reservoir continues to rise, further water releases may be required, which could lead to an additional increase in the river water level.

Public Safety Advisory Issued

In view of the expected rise in the Parbati River, NHPC has appealed to the general public, tourists, workers, and local residents to maintain a safe distance from the riverbanks and avoid venturing near the river during this period in downstream areas. The corporation has also requested hotel owners, guest house operators, homestay and campsite managers, and taxi drivers to inform and caution visitors and travellers about the potential danger and advise them to stay away from the riverbanks.

As part of the safety measures, warning hooters and sirens will be sounded before and during the water release. Additionally, public announcement vehicles will be deployed in nearby areas to alert residents and visitors about the increased discharge and the associated risks.

Cooperation and Precautionary Measures

NHPC has urged everyone to cooperate with the authorities and strictly follow the safety advisory in the interest of public safety. The corporation emphasized that the advisory has been issued as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety amid the anticipated increase in river discharge. Tourists and local residents are advised to stay away from riverbanks and follow all instructions issued by the authorities, avoiding unnecessary movement near the river.
