Russia has accused Western media of exploiting a recent drone incident in Romania for political gain, as tensions between Moscow and NATO escalate. Maria Zakharova, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, claimed that the West is using the attack story to distract from civilian deaths in the Ukrainian city of Starobelsk.
Diplomatic Crisis Erupts
The Kremlin has also blasted Romania's decision to shut down the Russian consulate in Constanta. The diplomatic crisis erupted after a drone hit a Romanian apartment block near Ukraine's border, prompting Romania to expel Russia's consul general. Moscow warned that retaliation could follow the expulsion.
Russia's Accusations
In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry accused NATO of 'protecting' Kyiv by diverting attention from alleged Ukrainian attacks on civilian areas. 'The killing of children in Starobelsk is being ignored while the West fabricates stories about a drone in Romania,' Zakharova said.
Escalating Tensions
The incident marks a new low in Russia-Romania relations. Romania, a NATO member, has been a key supporter of Ukraine since the war began. The drone attack, which caused no casualties, has been condemned by Western leaders, who blame Russia for the escalation.
Analysts warn that the diplomatic row could further strain Russia's ties with Eastern Europe. Moscow has not confirmed involvement in the drone strike but has dismissed Romania's claims as 'provocative.'
