Russia Drones Alert: Romania Scrambles NATO Jets Near Ukraine Border
Romania Scrambles NATO Jets After Russian Drone Alert

NATO Nation On High Alert After Russian Drone Activity

Romania found itself on high alert overnight as the country scrambled NATO-allied fighter jets in response to suspected Russian drone operations near its border with Ukraine. The incident occurred in the early hours of November 25, 2025, marking another escalation in the ongoing regional tensions.

Military Response and Jet Scrambles

The Romanian Defence Ministry confirmed that radar systems had detected unmanned aerial vehicles operating close to the Ukrainian port city of Izmail, which sits near the Romanian border. Initial response involved two German Eurofighter Typhoons deployed under NATO's air-policing responsibilities.

As the situation developed, authorities detected additional aerial targets appearing near the strategic Snake Island in the Black Sea. This prompted Romania to dispatch two of its own F-16 fighter jets to monitor the situation and protect national airspace.

Border Incidents Becoming Frequent

Although the suspected drones eventually disappeared from radar tracking and no foreign UAVs entered Romanian airspace, explosions were reported on the Ukrainian side of the border. Romanian authorities emphasized that such incidents along the border region have become increasingly common in recent months.

The frequency of these alerts has led to multiple civilian evacuations in border areas and renewed warnings about the risk of regional spillover from the conflict in Ukraine. This marks one of several similar incidents that have put NATO members on edge as the war continues to threaten neighboring countries' security.

Defense officials noted that while no direct violation of Romanian airspace occurred, the proximity of the drone activity and the necessary military response highlight the ongoing tensions in the Black Sea region and the constant vigilance required from NATO members bordering conflict zones.
