The United States' military campaign against Iran may be entering a dangerous new phase after President Donald Trump suggested Washington could eventually "take" Kharg Island and assume control over Iranian oil and gas markets.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote that "at some point in the not too distant future" the United States would be "taking Kharg Island, and other oil infrastructure points," language that has sparked intense debate among analysts over whether the administration is contemplating a move beyond airstrikes and maritime operations.
Strategic Importance of Kharg Island
Kharg Island is one of Iran's most strategically important assets. Located in the Persian Gulf, it serves as the country's primary oil export terminal and handles a substantial portion of Iran's crude shipments to international markets. Any attempt to physically seize or control the island would strike directly at the heart of Tehran's economic lifeline.
Uncertain Intentions
At this stage, it remains unclear whether Trump's remarks were intended as strategic signaling designed to increase pressure on Tehran or whether they reflect genuine operational planning. The White House and Pentagon have not publicly elaborated on the president's comments.
